I'm an expat-Angelino living in North Carolina. I went back to class after ten years. Life had gotten between me and dance. I literally had to start all over again. And it was so frustrating, because my brain knew exactly what to do, but my body did not follow. So, back to beginner’s class, which I did not like at all. Actually, I hated it because I was sure I could have done so much more than those “real beginners”. One day, a teacher gave me a talking-to. She said something like: “Listen, I can see you know a lot about dance. But your body has to re-adjust. Give it time.”
And so I did. It took me a long time, I was older, so things did not come easily. I was angry, I cried, I wanted to give up. For some reason, I did not. I met awful students and awful teachers who made comments when they thought I could not hear them. Then Scary Teacher came back, and he just was not going to believe me, when I said: “Oh, no, I can’t do this.” He made me do things I’d never even dreamed about. And I realized that even at my age I could become a better (and wiser) dancer. It was hard work and it still is, but it’s worth while.
